In 2015, a Developer on my team had an idea. He wanted to use server data to catch Researchers who created fake Reviewer accounts in order to peer review their manuscripts. Knowing he was on to something, we developed the project on the side until it was ready for review by the leadership team and Legal department.

Once the project was green-lit, I was both the Product Manager and UX Lead. I also assisted the Developer in ensuring the right data was displayed and that privacy concerns were addressed.

The goals of the project were to:

1. Improve the trust and validity of scientific research articles
2. Improve a journal’s reputation by simplifying the management of the submission and review processes.
3. Reduce the number of retractions by highlighting issues prior to publication.

Great care was taken in the UI and copy to ensure the privacy of the users and to not presume guilt.

Overleaf is a WYSIWYG manuscript editor for researchers, headquartered in the UK. As acting Product Manager for the project at ScholarOne, I led the effort to integrate its process into ScholarOne to simplify the manuscript submission process. Implementing a MVP strategy to phase the project, we successfully met the ambitious deadline.

ScholarOne conducts a large user conference with its clients. I am usually asked to speak about feature updates and enhancements.

Goals:

1. Walk through new features and improvements
2. Answer tough questions about the decisions made
3. Take the opportunity to engage in live, interactive polling like in this example from Nashville ...

The longest and largest presentation was in Lisbon, Portugal. I presented usability concepts behind my redesigned manuscript submission experience to ~120 major publishers and clients. For over an hour, I conveyed the concept that a great amount of thought was put into the updates, provided best practices for customized inputs, and answered tough questions regarding the implementation, roll out, and future strategy.

Leading the $1MM project, I overhauled both the ScholarOne Abstract and Manuscript platforms' submission processes.

Starting with a heuristic evaluations, I found the top issues with the section of the site. With a laptop, microphone, and recording software to capture the audio and mouse movements, I interviewed authors in-person at the University of Virginia. With my expereince in formal usability testing, I was careful not to lead them during questioning. The first interview was on the current site and the second on new design concepts, using low fidelity mock ups.

Ultimately, we used the responsive Bootstrap framework to complete the design and lay the foundation for further site updates.

WellAware Systems was a start-up that used motion and mattress sensors to predict falls and other risks for elderly patients in assistive living. Nurses and Customer Service Representatives used a complex monitoring system to assess the state of the facility and individuals. Utilizing best practices in usability and web design, I redesigned their dashboard to improve response times for care.

Note: WellAware Systems was acquired by HealthSense in 2013.

Some of the issues with the original site map were that it was ...

• Out-of-date
• Difficult to understand
• Used unconventional mapping techniques

Goals achieved in re-creating the site map:

• Made it easier to understand using a grid, iconography, and a key for all team members, not just UX
• Used web site conventions, helping to inform UX navigation changes
• Uncovered hidden issues and nvaigation problems (e.g. redundancy, multiple clicks to achieve tasks, etc.)

WellAware Systems was an start-up that used motion and mattress sensors to predict fall and UTI risks for elderly patients and assistive living residents. Clients and Customer Service Representatives (CSR) used a complex system to order monitoring packages in bulk or per individual.

My process involded interviewing end-users (remote), CSRs (on site), and Relationship Managers (remote). Plus I observed day-to-day tasks to analyze process improvements. Wireframes were then used for testing prior to development.

The final designs included the following:

• A default view that displays all of the orders for the user based on status with "Draft" and "Needs more information" at the top
• The ability to search for orders along with sub-searching, filtering, and sorting capabilities
• Mass "Actions" (moving orders into other statuses) added to increase productivity of CSRs
• Ability to export to Excel
• Creating an order is a dynamically building form which minimizes user input and screen to speed up the process
• Forms pre-filled information when possible

Prior to the release of this feature, Capital One customers had to proactively call to let the bank know if they would be away from their city. If they did not, their card might be declined for risk of fraud.

My team and I created an online form on the credit card servicing site to allow customers to:

• Notify the bank of travel plans
• Note multiple, specific locations
• Provide alternate contact information should problem arise

Full-size imagery was used with an overlay of the two ways to search for a credit card, a questionnaire or comparison chart. A "happy path" orange button was used for applying or logging in. The white frame border was used to bring the credit education and fraud alert sections to the front of the z-index.

I replaced the Holiday Rewards site landing page banners with holiday-themed designs that were non-denominational and well-branded. I used the familiar Capital One "booms" as graphical elements, Capital One blue and red for the gift wrap, and played with the concept of gifts coming out of a wallet.

Design a landing page for the PictureCard promotional mini-site that represented concept of placing your own image on a credit card.
